– Published/recognized research results: Formed and developed a new research direction on capital structure of a company at that time, developed in-depth research on factors affecting capital structure, the impact of capital structure on business performance, and business valuation. After that, many Ph.D. students in Vietnam continued to develop this research direction. Associate Professor Tu has published 21/77 articles in prestigious domestic and international journals.
Research direction 2: Corporate Governance in Banking and Bank Restructuring
– Define the problem and reasons for the research direction: Since 2011, when I moved to work at the University of Economics, VNUHN, it was also the period when the State Bank implemented Decision No. 254 November 2011 on Restructuring the system of credit institutions (CIs), with the desire to contribute scientific arguments to one of the three important issues of economic restructuring at that time, my research team and I chose the research direction on Corporate Governance in Banking and Bank Restructuring. Main research topics include international principles and best practices on corporate governance in banking, bank restructuring, risk appetite, characteristics of Vietnamese bank Boards of Directors, the relationship between characteristics of corporate governance and banking performance, transparency and information disclosure in banking, changes in corporate governance in banking before and after the global financial crisis, proactive restructuring and passive restructuring, risk management in commercial banks. This is also the research direction that creates the foundation for developing the Master’s program in Financial Institution Management at the University of Economics and Business, VNUHN (2016).
– Research methods: New econometric analysis methods are focused and applied in research: regression method to estimate endogenous variables GMM (Generalized Method of Moments), regression method for array data FEM (Fix Effect Models), REM (Random Effect Models). Qualitative research methods and in-depth interviews with experts were conducted to supplement scientific arguments, and estimated results were performed using quantitative research. From there, further clarify the practical evidence of the research problem and help propose policy recommendations.
– Projects that have been and are being implemented: Led 01 key VNU-level project, order number [03] Section 6 Form 01, and participated in 02 VNU-level projects, 01 KX01.16-20 project, supervised 06 PhD students in this research direction.

Research direction 3: Green Banking Finance and Circular Economy
– Define the problem and reasons for the research direction: This is a modern research direction in the world since the early years of the 21st century, when the world economy is aiming for sustainable development. In Vietnam, to implement the Green Growth Strategy until 2045, the role of the banking system in the economy is extremely important, when up to 70% of capital supplied to the economy comes through the banking system according to Wordbank’s National Reports. Therefore, I chose to research Green Banking Finance and Circular Economy in the context of sustainable development of the economy, and this is also one of the two majors of the Faculty of Banking and Finance: Commercial Banking.
This is a research direction that is both in-depth and interdisciplinary, with the following topics: international experience in developing green banking models and green investment funds; green credit policies, green investment, sets of indicators to measure the level of “greening” of businesses; the Government’s role in establishing a green financial system according to a “top-down” or “bottom-up” approach; types of green investment, legal conditions, sustainable accounting standards, the role of green financial intermediaries, green banking models and levels, levels of development of the circular economy, the differences between the linear economy and the circular economy, circular economy models, factors affecting the decision to choose a circular economy model, financial decisions of businesses circular business models in the green economy and circular economy.
– Research methods: The research team used the interdisciplinary balance sheet model (I/O Table) to quantify the impact of green finance on economic sectors. With the quantitative research model, data collected from the survey is coded and quantified for exploratory factor analysis (EFA) to determine a structure in the set of observed variables. Qualitative research methods and in-depth interviews with experts were also carried out to supplement scientific arguments and estimated results using quantitative research to further clarify the practical evidence of the research problem.
– Projects that have been and are being implemented: Led 01 national project, 01 Nafosted project, 01 key project at VNU-level, supervised 02 PhD students in this research direction.
– Published/recognized research results: Research projects have developed and perfected the theoretical system of green banking finance, and the role of the green financial system in green economic development in Vietnam, developed circular business models in Vietnam, contributed to the theory of green economy in Vietnam, specifically through 18 articles, including 05 articles in prestigious international journals.
