1. History and Development
The predecessor of Faculty of Applied Languages was Department of Academic Foundations which was established in 2008, just 6 years after International School, VNU, Hanoi (precursor of the VNU International School, Hanoi – the university level) was born, on July 24, 2002. Department of Academic Foundations operates under the Decision 603/QD-KQT dated November 4, 2015 by the Dean of International School, VNU, Hanoi on the functions, tasks, organizational structure and powers of the Departments.
Faculty of Applied Languages was officially named under Decision No. 68/QD-ĐHQGHN dated January 10, 2022 by the VNU President on promulgating regulations and organizing activities of VNU International School, Hanoi. Previously, on December 1, 2021, the VNU President issued Decision No. 3668/QD-ĐHQGHN on the establishment of an VNU International School, Hanoi at full university level under VNU on the basis of upgrading International School, VNU, Hanoi which used to have been at faculty level.

From its establishment until 2021, Department of Academic Foundations has been an important backbone of International School, VNU, Hanoi (the predecessor of the VNU International School, Hanoi at full university level), the Department carries out the mission of teaching English as a foreign language to students to help them get B2 degree before studying undergraduate programs in English; the department also provides other academic courses, such as, 1&2 English for Academic Purposes and 1&2 1&2 English for Specific Purposes for university students.

From May 2021, the project to open English language major (Business – IT) of Department of Academic Foundations has been approved by VNU, which allows the Department to provide undergraduate program of English Language. This is an important premise and turning point in the mission to decide that the Department of Academic Foundations can be upgraded into the Faculty of Applied Linguistics after the International Faculty, VNU, Hanoi (at faculty level) is upgraded to VNU International School, Hanoi (at full university level) affiliated to VNU according to Decision No. 3668/QD-DHQGHN on December 1, 2021.

Accordingly, from January 10, 2022, Faculty of Applied Linguistics ​​has the task of organizing the training program for the Bachelor of English Language; Double major bachelor’s degree programs in English, Preparatory English Training (General English), 1&2 English for Academic Purposes and 1&2 1&2 English for Specific Purposes for undergraduate students. In addition, Faculty of Applied Linguistics ​​also carries out applied linguistics research, improving teaching and learning methods, testing and assessment methods, foreign language education policy research, and interdisciplinary research in foreign languages ​​- education – culture – specialized specialties. The faculty also cooperates with foreign language training units, national and international enterprises using foreign language human resources to develop training, scientific research, service provision and technology transfer, job practice, creating employment opportunities for students.

Faculty of Applied Linguistics always understands and serves the core values of VNU International School, Hanoi, i.e., High Quality, Creativity, Pioneering, Responsibility and International Integration.
