On November 27th, the International School – Vietnam National University, Hanoi organized the International Symposium on English as a Medium of Instruction and English Language Teaching: Trends and Challenges in Vietnamese Universities (ISEE 2024).
The ISEE International Symposium serves as a forum for leading national and international scientists, researchers, and scholars to discuss and share their latest research findings on various aspects related to the use of English as a medium of instruction (EMI) in the present and to anticipate future trends.
In the opening of the Symposium, Associate Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Dinh, Vice Rector of the International School, stated that the International Symposium, themed “English as a Medium of Instruction and English Language Teaching: Trends and Challenges in Vietnamese Universities,” was co-organized by VNU International School (VNUIS), Hanoi Open University (HOU) and University of Economics – Technology for Industries (UNETI), in collaboration with VietTESOL association.
This is an important forum to explore advancements, emerging trends, and existing challenges within the fields of English Medium Instruction (EMI) and English Language Teaching (ELT), with a particular focus on the transformative role of technology and research.
The symposium theme underscores the growing significance of English within the Vietnamese academic context. As universities strive for academic excellence, the effective use of English – as both a medium of instruction and a subject of study – becomes essential.
The symposium showcased over 70 research papers presented in formal sessions, offering a comprehensive overview of the latest research and developments in the field. These presentations were enriched by esteemed keynote speakers, Professor Antony John Kunnan from Carnegie Mellon University and Dr. Joel C. Meniado from the SEAMEO Regional Language Centre. Their extensive expertise will provide valuable insights into the challenges faced in English Medium Instruction (EMI) and English Language Teaching (ELT).
The ISEE 2024 conference consists of 3 parallel discussion sessions, including the following topics: Practices of EMI & ELT, Technology in EMI & ELT, Studies in English Language, EMI & ELT Testing & Assessment.
The international symposium on English as a Medium of Instruction and Teaching English provided an opportunity for English Language students of the International School to participate in writing and presenting their research. The research papers from faculty and students received significant attention from attendees, who engaged in discussions to help the presenters refine their studies. At the end of the conference, two groups of English Language students and three faculty members from the Applied Linguistics Department won the Best Paper award. This is truly the joy and pride of the International School, reflecting its individualized training policy and talent development through research groups.
The International School always pays special attention to the research activities of lecturers and students. In addition to establishing mechanisms and policies to promote research, the school actively organizes international conferences and workshops, sending students and teachers to participate in domestic and international conferences to enhance their research capabilities.
