From September 19 to 29, 2023, the International School – Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) and Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Singapore, organized the “Overseas Immersion Programme” (OIP). This is the second practical exchange program for Singaporean students organized in 2023. The first program was held in March of this year and left many positive impressions on the students of Ngee Ann Polytechnic.
OIP September 2023 Closing Ceremony took place with many unforgettable memories for both Vietnamese and Singaporean students.
Discovering Vietnam with excellent local guides
Over the past 10 days, students from Ngee Ann Polytechnic have had the chance to explore the culture, landscape, people, economy, and society of Vietnam. And what about the Vietnamese students who participated? They took on the role of tour guides, proudly showcasing their homeland, its inhabitants, and especially the vibrant Vietnamese youth. They did not disappoint the Singaporean students. Thanks to the dedicated guidance and support from these local guides, the students from Ngee Ann Polytechnic were able to gain deeper insights into Vietnamese culture and traditions through their visits to museums and various landmarks in Hanoi. The Singaporean students also got a taste of the local youth culture, experiencing the street-side coffee and iced tea culture, understanding what the young locals like to do, what dishes they enjoy, and their favorite hangout spots during their leisure time, through their strolls around the streets and districts of Hanoi.
The program featured various general topics, presented by lecturers from VNU. The lectures given by the professors and instructors helped both Singaporean and Vietnamese students gain a deeper understanding of the nation’s history, culture, economy, and society, as well as insights into the contemporary young generation.
Exploring Hanoi always captivates the Singaporean students.
“OIP has given me the opportunity to enrich my knowledge and understanding of Hanoi and the long-standing culture of this city. Vietnam and Hanoi – a country/city that is always bustling with hardworking and admirable people. The outskirts of Hanoi are also beautiful with long-stretched mountains and lush farms. I hope to return to Vietnam again,” shared Math, a student from Ngee Ann Polytechnic.

In this experiential program, there were a number of international students who also registered to participate. These international students, along with Vietnamese students, have created a positive impact on Ngee Ann Polytechnic students, they have been becoming ambassadors who connected Singaporean students with the people and culture of Vietnam.
The blossom of friendship
Math also mentioned that he had met some wonderful friends in Hanoi, from which their friendship had blossomed and thrived. Shuang and Shabera also enthusiastically shared their experiences with new friends at International University. Shuang expressed, “OIP has given me chance to encounter and bond new friendship. I hope other students will have similar experiences as mine.”
Warm and intimate friendship have blossomed.
Shabera stated that the students from the International University have shared useful information and knowledge about Vietnam, which changed her perspectives and understanding of the country and its people. She said, “My understanding of Vietnamese culture, society, and the country has been deepened significantly through this trip. What’s even more special is that we had the chance to meet and get to know Vietnamese teachers, students who were extremely hospitable, friendly, and dedicated which made us feel happy and appreciative.”
After 10 days of learning and experiencing, the perspectives of many Singaporean students have changed. Vietnam is now seen as a country with a diverse culture and a developing economy, offering potential opportunities for investor and career development.
